I’m a gadget type of guy and I’ve had my eye on these digital photo albums for quite some time. The early models had small screens and looked more like an electronic device and not a real picture frame. I got some cash for Christmas, saw this Kodak M1020 frame and decided to go for it.

It is very easy to use and the display is bright and sharp. The device offers several options for loading photos… USB cable to load built-in memory via computer, USB flash drive, and various common format flash memory cards. The menu interface is unusual and does take a little getting used to, but I’m glad it is not a touch screen. I’d rather use a quirky interface touching the outer frame when needed rather than have to remove finger prints from the screen every time I change the settings. A remote would have been a better option – but this model does not have one. I use the feature to turn the frame off and on at specified times (why display photos all night long). I managed to get the music feature to work – but doubt I’ll use it.

I paid 0 — which is pretty hefty in my book. But it is a nice size, looks nice, and offers enough features to make it worth the price. I just hope it lasts.

One issue I did have… I resized about 5000 photos to the native resolution of the device (800 x 480) and put them on a single SD card. The frame software had a real tough time dealing with that many photos. Displaying thumbnails would take forever and occationally, the frame would lock up for a while and reboot. I cut the number of photos in half and the reboot problem stopped. But still, some menu functions are still sluggish. Even a few thousand photos seems to be straining the application. And as other reviewers have said – the shuffle feature is not as random as it should be. The sequence repeats and not all the the photos make it into the slideshow.

FYI: Kodak released a firmware update (12-2009) — which I loaded tonight. I reinstalled my SD card with 5000+ photos and the frame seems to be performing much better. The “shuffle” seems to be showing photos I have not seen before, so perhaps that feature is fixed. Time will tell. Anyway – I’m glad to see that Kodak is still supporting and trying to improve the product. Hopefully they will continue to do so.

One last thing… My family thought I was crazy for buying this with my Christmas cash. But they have changed their tune. The frame is within view of the TV — and every family member finds that they are distracted from their TV show and end up watching the slide show on the photo frame. 20+ years of family photos (scans and digital photos) brings back lots of memories. It really is a cool gadget. I imagine they will be everywhere in a few years. They are a great way of getting those digital photos off of your hard drive and made visible so they can be enjoyed.

This item seems to work fairly well, but the manual said that a USB cable is included for loading pictures. We bought two as Christmas presents and neither included the cable. Emails to vendor were ignored and we never got the cables. Would not recommend buying from this vendor.

The user interface is badly designed, super slow and super inefficient.
It didn’t play .mov clips my canon camera took even though it said it could. The online tech support replied quickly with lots of details, but I don’t 100% believe/agree, because neither the picture frame nor the camera provided such detailed specification, how would an ordinary consumer knows! I am very disappointed.

I have been looking for a digital photo frame for a long time and it was either this one of the 11″ polaroid. Those were the only two I liked well enough to buy and own. HP and Polaroid are two great well known brand names. They have been around for a long time. I was debating on buying this frame considering the reviews, but I wen’t for it and I am so glad I did. This is a beautiful digital photo frame. I love it. My mom even loves it and she did not like the polaroid one. I recommend this frame to everyone that is wanting to buy a frame. When I inserted a memory card, it got stuck though, but it was because I got it in too far. Also I started having problems with the power button, it will turn on, but can’t turn it off for some reason, but it used to. You have to hold the power button down for a while though to turn the frame on. I have over 100 pictures on it and no problems. Downloading pictures onto it is a breeze. The picture frame has 512mb of internal memory on it. The pictures on it are excellent. I also bought a toshiba 8 gb. usb flash drive for it and I have one video and over 100 songs on it and no problems. Works fantastic. Music sounds great.

I just bought the frame and put a 16GB sd card in it; works great. Took a while to copy the over 9GB of picture to it but had no errors.

My one complaint is that the picture frame starts over from the beginning of the pictures everytime you power it up. With over 5200 photos it would be great it would remember the current picture at power off and start from there the next time it starts up. This would be such a simple upgrade to the firmware I’m surprised HP has not done this yet.

A fine quality product as should be expected from HP. I am not a “techie” but I was able to get it going with a bit of trouble. The quality of the device and the results are excellent but I thought the instructions and switches could be simplified for use by an oldster like myself.

Good frame but has some ‘known’ quirks – D. Byers –
Paid 9 at a local warehouse club… It is worth that much to me, but not worth what Amazon is asking today (8).

Pros:
*Good picture quality.
*Easy to use the core features.
*Nicer looking than most e-frames. It actually looks like a picture frame instead of a gadget.

Cons:
*Made in China. (but try finding one that isn’t)
*In spite of its ease of basic use, configuration settings are not very intuitive.
*When copying photos to internal memory, it often errors out. Requires some patience.
*Shuffle mode is weak, not random. Always starts with the same photo and although I have hundreds of photos loaded I see the same 20 or so repeatedly.
*There are known problems/bugs that HP knows about and are working on a firmware upgrade for–but according to what I’ve read in other product forums HP has been promising the bug fix for a long time:
*On mine, the built-in clock/calendar function has been flakey, causing the auto-on/off and the calendar view functionality to be useless. I have mine at the office and set it to turn on at 8 and turn off at 5… Worked great for the first few days. Then one day I noticed it was on in the morning before the scheduled time so I checked the time. The clock setting was way off. I think it was agravated by the fact that I unplug it and lock it up every weekend. Over the last 2 weeks it worsened until the clock didn’t even move anymore. I read on a blog somewhere that there is a CR2032 battery inside that is the culprit. Opened mine up and replaced the battery this morning. So far, the clock appears to be moving again. I also saw mention of other clock problems and HP promised firmware upgrades.

Overall I like the frame and would recommend it.

If my problems were an anomaly due to a weak backup battery then I’ll be fully satisfied with the purchase. HP would be well advised to make that battery externally accessable and incorporate a battery insulator tab to prevent battery drain during shipping like my 2-year old son’s toys always arrive with.

Update: The battery thing seems to have worked. I also got a reply from HP (in broken English) advising to do a full reset & if that doesn’t fix it then the frame is ‘faulty’ and I’d need to contact the retailer for help. Sure hope I don’t have to go there…

I ordered this frame as a gift and I’m really impressed with the photo size and quality. It was easy to set up and the remote is a great feature. I love the size of the photos in this frame and they look great. Vertical shots are cropped a bit, but not so that they are awful. The only wrinkle in its operation is getting back to the slide show after the frame has been turned off. It’s not automatic – or at least we haven’t figured out how to make it automatic. Otherwise it is operating beautifully. I’m also pleased that it has a 1 year warranty. I had purchased a different brand at Christmas for the same person and that frame only lasted about 5 months before it just stopped working. Granted, they are on almost 24-7 but what good are they if you can’t have them on?

I am so pleased with the frame that I just ordered one for myself.

It never worked for me, I sent couple of emails to the vendor and never got a response.Hate to say that but never had this kind of experience as I could’nt find any customer service number to contact.

Mediocre frame, few features – Gabriel’s Buddy – Carrboro, NC USA
I’ve ordered several frames from various manufacturers (Pandigital and Smartpants), but this one (by Portable USA) is the only one I ended up returning. The primary reason was the picture seemed washed out and there was dust between the glass and the LCD that couldn’t be removed because of the way the frame is constructed. It made it look like there were pixels that were burnt out. The look of the frame itself is, of course, a matter of opinion, but this one seemed less sleek than most; that is too say the frame itself dominated the picture.

As for options, there were just a few. Many frames have a clock/timer function that turns the frame on and off but this one did not. For example, my frame at work turns on a few minutes before I get in and turns off just after I leave. The Pandigital frames allow you to have different times for the week and weekend, which is extra handy for an office situation (or even at home when you might want it the opposite of your office schedule). Not having this meant I would have to either leave it on all the time or remember to turn it on and off. It seemed odd to have to do this for the frame (you don’t turn other pictures on your desk on and off).

It was OK as a frame but, for the price, I expected more.

This is the first time I’ve ever written a product review, but I would love to save other people time and money. I purchased this as a gift for someone, and have spent way too much time trying to get it to work. The first frame came with a faulty battery in the remote. When we replaced the battery, the remote & frame worked for about 3 days. After that, it stopped reading any kind of memory card. We exchanged the frame for a new one, which also came with a faulty remote. We tried buying a new battery for it and it still wouldn’t work, so frame #2 is being returned. Save your money.

I bought this frame for my mother so she could enjoy pics of the grandkids. Their Momento Live service isn’t the best, but it did allow me to upload pics, which would be downloaded to the frame. I live in California, she lives in PA. It was a good solution for us at the time.

Unfortunately the company is shuttering the service at the end of Feb. 2009.

Now we have an expensive (0+ piece of hardware that will sit in her house and no longer provide access to one of the main features that lead me to buy it.

Buyer beware.

Don’t buy this frame! Momento Live service being terminated – C. Swenton – Boston, MA USA
I have had this frame since October 2007. Besides the hassle of getting it on my wireless network, I have loved using the frame and viewing my pictures. But yesterday I received an email stating that the Momento Live service which allows you to view photos on your frame via RSS feeds is now being discontinued. With that said, don’t buy this frame! Sadly, my frame is now identical to the Kodak frame that I just bought my mom for Christmas.

I bought this frame in December 08 to share pictures from our live in Singapore with our parents in Germany.

Unfortunately the momentolive service never worked as advertised, actually this service did not work at all. Mails to imate service remained unanswered or were answered using standard text blocks.

On top of that I received now a mail stating that the momentolive service will be terminated in March ‘09, so the frame will be just a frame like all other photo frames.

It is able to show pictures from various memory cards, photos hosted and shared by a Windows Media Player Library and is able to act as Windows SideShow device.

This is really nice. It is bigger than mine at home. The white boarder on the frame is also a nice touch to let the pictures stand out. The resolution is also really good. I don’t think the price would have dropped if the resolution was higher. This thing does not look cheap if you’re worried about how it looks up close. It really looks good & classy. Ding’d the features because it would be so practical to have alarms with a calendar and clock. Ding’d a star on picture quality because there are simply digital frames out there with higher resolution quality. Great buy for a 10 inch with extra features like internal memory at this reduced price. Enjoy!

I bought this as a gift and uploaded photos before given, really easy to use.
As mentioned above, the only downside I found whas with fitting pictures that are vertical when the frame is set to be horizontal, it just doesn’t fit right.

Great picture from all sides, but could be better when looking from beneeth (sitting in sofa, the frame is in the bookshelf at 6 feet from the floor). Have not tried the wireless uploading. The frame looks good and fits great inbetween books. Easy to use and comes with a very easy remote controll.
